Best Performance Engine
  BMW 5-litre V10 (M5, M6)

“When V10s roar, V8s quake – and this engine is the king of the V10s”
Brian Cowan, freelance

There seems no stopping BMW’s V10 powerhouse, and having been deployed in two more cars during the last year – the 10-cylinder is now in a convertible version of the M6 as well as the M5 Touring – the engine has picked up its third straight Best Performance category Award from the International Engine of the Year Awards jury.

The engine’s winning combination of performance and technology convinced the Awards jury that in 2007, the V10 was still their number one, creating cars that rocket to 100km/h (62mph) from rest in 4.7 seconds, and that have 507bhp and maximum torque of 520Nm available. Performance aside, the 90° vee-angled engine boasts a long list of technological innovations that include bi-VANOS variable valve timing and the 10 flow- optimised intake trumpets.

This year, the main challenge to the BMW came from within the Munich-based company as the hugely impressive petrol twin-turbo emerged as a real contender for the V10’s performance title. Ferrari’s 6-litre V12 found in the 599 GTB was also a popular choice, the Italian unit accumulating 170 points to take it to third place.

At next year’s Awards the V10 will doubtless face even stiffer competition for the performance crown from new contenders including the 420bhp V8 from the latest M3. But for the time being it is the V10 that continues to be the judges’ favourite. Giannis Charpidis from 4Wheels was one of the many to eulogise about its virtues. He said of the engine: “Exceptional technology, impressive performance and an addictive character from a pure sport engine that makes you smile.”
