Above 4-litre
  BMW 5-litre V10 (M5, M6)

“With an aggressive and addictive character, this engine will always make you smile”
Giannis Charpidis, 4Wheels

The overall winner of the International Engine of the Year title for the past two years, the 5-litre V10 from BMW that powers the M5 and M6, returns in 2007 to secure the Above 4-litre category title for the third consecutive year. The victory means that in all, the unit has now won eight ‘Engine Oscars’.

The 507bhp, 520Nm powerhouse continues to be showered with praise by Awards judges. “Still lust-worthy, and a technological triumph for naturally aspirated engines,” said Chris Walton from Edmunds.com. “A great engine and an even greater sound,” added Auto News Agency’s Mohamed Sheta.

The object of their affection is a V10 with a 90° vee angle, which allows it to be optimally placed lower under the bonnet of the M5 or M6 that it powers. It boasts one-piece, four-valve, aluminium cylinder heads, while the valvetrain components, such as the 5mm valve shafts, have been engineered for low mass. Production techniques have also played their part in keeping the weight low – the cylinder crankcases are cast using the low- pressure gravity die method and made from a lightweight hypereutectic aluminium silicon alloy.

The V10’s enduring popularity is particularly impressive given that the engine had two strong new challengers in 2007 in the form of Ferrari’s 6-litre V12 from the 599 GTB and the hybrid 5-litre V8 in the Lexus LS600h. Nevertheless, in the opinion of the jury the victory was still a clear one. As Jake Venter from South Africa’s CAR put it, “Nothing has appeared in the last 12 months to rival the large doses of Formula 1 technology that are displayed in the mighty V10.”
