“Combining direct injection with a compressor;
welcome to the new age of small engines”
Leonid Golovanov, Autoreview

Continuing where it left off, Volkswagen has triumphed in the best 1-litre to 1.4-litre engine for the second consecutive year by some margin. Indeed the company’s 1.4-litre TSI (Torque Strong Twincharger), finished over 200 points clear of the second-placed Honda 1.3-litre hybrid.

In addition to being equipped with direct injection, which enabled VW engineers to choose a high compression ratio of 10:1, the 1.4-litre employs both a turbocharger and a supercharger to generate its 168bhp and 240Nm of torque at 1,750rpm in the higher-power version. The high specific output of 119bhp is achieved thanks to the use of the upstream supercharger, which increases the boost pressure build-up of the exhaust turbocharger and fills the hole in the torque at low revs. Fuel consumption is reduced by minimising supercharger use at high engine speeds; a bypass valve is usually deployed at 2,400rpm or under hard acceleration at up to 3,500rpm.

The judges have been quick to praise Volkswagen for the innovation of the engine; Farah AlKhalisi of 4car.co.uk said: “Volkswagen’s TSI is an effective solution to downsizing without losing out on either performance or responsiveness.” Her thoughts were echoed by German judge Thomas Imhof, who noted: “TSI is an ingenious way to combine high fuel efficiency with great power. It proves how strongly a small heart can beat.”

The initial 168bhp incarnation of the TSI has since been joined by a lower-powered 138bhp variant and the engine has been additionally deployed to the Jetta saloon and Touran MPV.
