1.8-litre to 2-litre
  Volkswagen/Audi 2-litre Turbo FSI

“Few two-litres impersonate a three-litre as
effectively as this VW Group unit”
Frank Markus,
Motor Trend

“Versatile and clever; small but seriously strong” was how Playboy’s Ken Gross described the popular 2-litre Audi- developed powerplant that has now topped the 1.8-litre to 2-litre category for a third year in a row.

With a number of available outputs including 168bhp and 197bhp, different versions of this engine are used in a wide range of products across the VW Group including the Golf, Audi A6, SEAT Leon and the Octavia from Czech automaker Škoda.

The engine was devised by thoroughly reworking the 1,984cc normally aspirated unit and adding a turbocharger to boost performance. Other vital changes to the architecture included the modification of the cylinder head with sodium-filled exhaust valves, armoured inlet and exhaust valve seats, variable valve timing, and a Bosch Motronic MED 9.1 ECU to monitor proceedings. The result is an engine that offers 280Nm of torque at 1,800rpm when housed in the Golf GTi.

Many of the judges identified the Turbo FSI’s adaptability as a strong suit. Giannis Charpidis of Greece’s 4Wheels called the engine “smooth and powerful, with a variety of versions that perfectly meet the needs of cars with many different characters”. For Australia’s Bill McKinnon, meanwhile, the TFSI is “an engine that feels right in any application you care to name, from hot hatch through to executive express”.

The VW Group is continuing to widen the portfolio of TFSIs, having recently installed a 238bhp variant in the SEAT Leon Cupra and, most powerful of all, a 261bhp example in the four-wheel-drive Audi S3. Such deployments look set to secure TFSI’s popularity for years to come.
